Roll Anodes (ZLA)
Rolled zinc sheet for insertion into drilled holes, which are then filled with zinc activator paste and connected to a conductor cable which is connected to the reinforcement. It is easy to install and anodes can be located wherever they are needed to protect corroding reinforcement.
Standard roll anodes are 2.5cm diameter 12.5cm long. The roll is made from a 37.5cm long piece of ZLA and contains 83gms of pure zinc. The anodes can be connected together to form a string for deep holes.
Special anodes can be fabricated if the project is large enough. For example the following anodes were supplied to RMS for a bridge pier:
• 12.5cm long x 3cm diameter (55cm length of ZLA) = 120 gms zinc
• 25cm long x 3cm diameter (55cm length of ZLA) = 240 gms zinc

Application Areas
Typically Roll Anodes are used where:
- potentials show only isolated areas of corrosion;
- there is widespread activation but geometry, exposure or aesthetics mean ZLA cannot be used;
- contaminate ingress analysis shows that there is a high risk of future corrosion activation, for example where sufficient chlorides have penetrated the concrete such that coatings will not prevent future corrosion; and,
- where specific zones are corroding and there is no suitable surface for ZLA so that it is simpler to drill holes and insert Roll Anodes.
A Simply Applied Internal Anode System
Galvanic anode systems are much simpler than impressed current systems and the Roll Anodes enable the precise location of anodes for a particularly simple internal anode system. In the best-case scenario simply drill holes, insert the Roll Anode, fill with activator paste and connect to the reinforcement.
